Oregon BioEvolution Poster Released

June 24, 2008, BEND, OREGON – "Oregon BioEvolution," a genealogy poster that that illustrates the "technology origins" of the more than 100 biotechnology, and medical device firms that comprise the life science industry in the state of Oregon, was unveiled today by Info.Resource, Inc., owner and publisher of www.OregonLifeScience.com.

"Oregon is a rapidly growing life science center and I believe that industry, academia and government need to understand the technology origins that led to this national position so that we can continue to provide stewardship for further growth and economic development," said Phil Ness, President & CEO of Info.Resource.

The Oregon BioEvolution poster is based on phone interviews with company and non-profit organization representatives, and depicts the origins of a company's "founding" technology and technology licensing relationships with the state's universities and non-profit research organizations -- the economic engines supporting innovative research and development. Other survey findings include:

  • Nearly one-fourth of Oregon’s life science industry was founded since 2000;
  • More than one-third of the biotechnology and medical device firms in the state are founded on technologies licensed from Oregon Health & Science University, University of Oregon, and Providence Health & Services;
  • Sixty percent is engaged in the research and development, and manufacture of biotechnology products and/or services for human therapeutic, diagnostic or agricultural applications;
  • Thirty-four percent develop and/or manufacture medical devices. The remaining firms comprise nonprofit research organizations, pharmaceutical, and nanotechnology companies.

The Oregon BioEvolution poster is sponsored by Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Advanced Technology Construction, BioLife Solutions, Economic Development For Central Oregon, Ikaria, Lease Crutcher Lewis, Oregon Bioscience Association, Oregon Health & Science University, Perkins Coie, Ratner BioMedical Group, SABArchtiects, Technical Safety Services, The Blume Company, among others.
