May 18 HIV Vaccine Awareness Day.
This annual observance is a day to recognize and thank the thousands of volunteers,
community members, health professionals, and scientists who are working together to
find a safe and effective HIV vaccine. It is also a day to educate our communities
about the importance of preventive HIV vaccine research.
In recognition of HIV Vaccine Awareness Day, community activities and media events
are being held around the country.

On May 18, 1967, Tennessee Governor Buford Ellington signed a law that repealed the
prohibition of teaching evolution that was used to prosecute teacher John Scopes in 1925.
On March 21, 1925 Tennessee Governor Austin Peay signed the Butler Act which prohibited
the teaching of evolution in any Tennessee state-funded school and university. On May 5, 1925,
School teacher John Scopes was charged with violating Tennessee state law by teaching
Darwin's theory of evolution resulting in the Scopes Trial, often called the "Scopes
Monkey Trial."
