Research Associate I, Bioassay Development

About the Position

We are looking for a Research Associate who will be responsible for running established high content and high throughput assays for the generation of panels of antibodies for use as therapeutics, diagnostics and imaging agents. The Research Associate will generate high quality data using biologically relevant assays with ongoing engagement and collaboration with other team members. The Research Associate will also run previously validated, challenging bioassays to validate new targets. The Research Associate will frequently be challenged to critically analyze results, and contribute to the Zymeworks team effort to create first-in-class therapeutics.

This position will report to the Senior Scientist, Assay Development and will be based in Vancouver, BC

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performs routine experiments following established procedures and practices.
  • Makes detailed observations, maintains records of raw data, describes methods, prepares data and analysis and summarizes results.
  • Explains reasons for variances. May interpret results and make recommendations on findings.
  • Prepares basic written reports and analysis of experiments. Consults with others for data interpretation. Communicates results and analysis to working group.
  • Seeks to understand ongoing projects through attention to scientific literature and internally generated data.
  • Maintains lab and performs routine duties in order to keep laboratory clean, neat and in efficient operational order.
  • Conducts all activities in accordance with scientific standards, OH&S regulations and established policies and practices.
  • May contribute to co-authorship or acknowledgment for contributions to scientific papers
  • Demonstrates effective and collaborative working relationships with fellow employees and management.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Requires a BSc in a scientific discipline and a minimum of 0 to 2 years’ related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a member of cross-functional team. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to work effectively in a high paced, fast changing environment.
  • Results-oriented.
  • Critical observation skills and good statistical analysis capability.
  • Effective oral communication and scientific/technical writing skills.
  • Ability to present data at team meetings.
  • Basic understanding of lab techniques and methods, which may include:
    • ELISA
    • Flow cytometry
    • Protein purification
    • Mammalian tissue culture
    • Media and buffer preparation
    • Preparation of serial dilutions
    • Molarity calculations
    • Total protein quantitation and size
      estimations using SDS-PAGE
  • Basic understanding in the use of lab equipment, which may include:
    • pH meters
    • Analytical balances
    • Centrifuges
    • Single and multichannel pipettes
    • Inverted microscopes
    • Spectrophotometers
    • Luminometers
