Summary

Seagen is seeking a highly motivated Vice President of Program and Portfolio Management with strong drug development, project management, and portfolio management skills to oversee the company’s expanding portfolio and to help drive value creation and drug development and commercialization outcomes.

This position will oversee program leadership and program management of the company’s extensive pipeline of new ADCs and immuno-oncology programs, as well as accountability for portfolio analysis, prioritization and decision making via the company’s Portfolio Steering Committee (PSC). The individual and the group’s program leaders will work collaboratively to ensure integration of clinical, commercial, CMC, regulatory, R&D and financial inputs into defensible product strategies.

This position is a key member of the Seagen executive leadership and requires the ability to provide strategic leadership cross-functionally to all parts of the organization. The role is also a key partner in corporate processes such as Board of Directors planning, corporate goal setting, budgeting, annual operating plans and long-range planning. This is an exciting and interdisciplinary role for a highly qualified, strategic and motivated individual with strong experience in drug development.

Principal Responsibilities:

The VP must be able to provide strategic vision and guide teams to develop integrated plans for successfully executing product development strategies, as well as drive effective decision-making and portfolio management. The successful delivery of product decisions, milestones and goals ties to the success of Seagen’s overall strategy for our robust portfolio.

Program Leadership and Program Management:

  • Lead a team of ~30 Product Team Leaders, Heads of Early and Late-Stage Program Management and Program Managers who provide strategic leadership and support to more than 15 early, late-stage and marketed products in the Seagen pipeline
  • Mentor PTLs and Program Managers to effectively plan and execute on their programs
  • Ensure effective communications to align program activities with corporate strategy
  • Identify and champion, in partnership with Heads of Early and Late-Stage PMs, best program management practices to be instituted including integrated planning, risk identification and contingencies, action item and decision-making tracking, and use of dashboards, templates and tools
  • Ensure appropriate staff skills, competencies and development plans are in place for the team and track the deployment of program leadership and program management support to programs

Portfolio Management:

  • Implement and oversee portfolio management capabilities, processes and data analytics to support decision-making to maximize R&D spend, company scale and portfolio value
  • Ensure effective communication of program and portfolio reports to executive management on a routine basis
  • Lead annual and mid-year program strategy reviews to ensure corporate alignment of program strategies, visibility to upcoming decisions and portfolio prioritization
  • Organize and facilitate the PSC meetings ensuring appropriate topics, preparation by the teams, well-defined expectations and tracking of decisions
  • Ensure effective execution of the Development Review Committee in close collaboration with DRC chairs and Head of Early and Late-Stage PM
  • Oversee and maintain the Portfolio Operating Model, including the stage gate steps from programs at Research to Development and Development to Pivotal transitions
  • Provide program specific inputs to corporate goals, annual operating plan, long-range plan and budget
  • Provide guidance to program teams on Board of Directors content
  • Partner closely with finance on utilization and continuous improvement of financial analysis processes to support product investment decisions
  • Ensure coordinated evaluation of product opportunities, comprehensive integrated recommendations and strategic and operational product plans based on program defined objectives

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree and 15+ years of experience in life sciences industry, with 7+ years of demonstrated program management experience managing cross-functional product development efforts in biologics
  • Experience with portfolio management and decision-making
  • Outstanding leadership skills and demonstrated passion for science and innovation and in developing drugs that make a real difference in patient’s lives
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, an innovative approach to problem-solving, and an integrated view of business and scientific issues
  • Direct, hands-on experience with managing teams for late stage and commercial products
  • Experience with life cycle management of commercial products
  • Direct experience in oncology
  • Demonstrated experience in drug development through commercialization in biotechnology/biopharma industry
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Experience in collaborative/partnered drug development
  • Direct experience managing a group of program leaders and program managers. Must be adept at engaging, motivating and developing a team of high-performance professionals
  • Ability to work independently and successfully in a matrix environment, and to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
