Company Description

Zymeworks is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery, development and commercialization of next-generation bispecific and multifunctional biotherapeutics, initially focused on the treatment of cancer. Zymeworks’ suite of complementary therapeutic platforms and its fully-integrated drug development engine provide the flexibility and compatibility to precisely engineer and develop highly-differentiated product candidates.

Zymeworks is seeking a highly-motivated professional who is looking to grow their career with our company. The Head of Strategic Sourcing is responsible for the design, development and execution of the company’s direct (goods) and indirect (services) sourcing strategy to maximize business performance, while reducing financial and business risk. The successful candidate must effectively operate cross-functionally to fully understand mission critical business needs, analyze existing sourcing methodologies and design end to solutions to eliminate gaps and optimize solutions in support of business goals. While this role has 2 direct reports, there are other procurement specialists across the company this roll will need to coordinate and work with to ensure all procurement efforts are aligned with central procurement processes and standards. The Head of Strategic Sourcing will also partner heavily with the ERP implementation team to support design and testing of purchasing modules for a Tier 1 ERP system.

This position will report to the Executive Director, FP&A & Corporate Finance and will be based in Seattle, WA.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Sourcing Strategy: Creates, aligns and maintains company-wide sourcing strategies to continuously re-evaluate and improve procurement of goods and services aligned and supporting core business objectives.
  • Supplier Strategy, Selection and Governance: Design, implement and manage category specific supplier strategy, selection process and ongoing inter-disciplinary governance body to ensure a cohesive supplier ecosystem which supports long term business goals. Conduct ongoing market intelligence and competitive bid processes (RFP, RFQ, RFI) to establish benchmarks and ensure favorable agreements and pricing.
  • Negotiation: Develop detailed negotiation strategies to enable high quality deliverables which support business needs at an optimized price while mitigating risk. Lead large scale negotiations on behalf of key stakeholders.
  • Contracting: Provide contracting subject matter expertise and guidance on terms and conditions, pricing, and incentive models. Oversee supplier contract administration, compliance and accountability including quality KPIs, operational efficiency and cost reduction.
  • Supplier Management: Segment suppliers and utilizes engagement programs to improve performance and supplier relationships over time, work to establish long term relationships where mutually beneficial. Lead strategic business reviews of supplier performance and remediation efforts when necessary.
  • Business & Stakeholder Engagement: Develop and maintain trusted stakeholder relationships across Business, Finance, Operations and Legal teams. Work across many teams to collaboratively and creatively solve problems and optimize results.
  • Leadership: Serve as a thought leader to drive continuous improvement across the company. Efficient, strategic problem solver who is comfortable working independently, thinks holistically about key issues, and helps influence positive outcomes.

Qualifications and Education

  • Experience in Procurement key categories, including professional services required.
  • Experience on large-scale mission critical projects - sourcing, managing, and administering contracts with a portfolio over USD $100M, with demonstrated improvement over time.
  • Experience in the biotech industry preferred.
  • Experience in establishing benchmarks which are used to set procurement savings targets.
  • Can create clarity, generate energy, and deliver success.
  • Has a proven track record of yielding results.
  • Must be ethical and strong value-based individual focused on fairness and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Bring high energy and have a drive to achieve results in midst of ambiguity and a matrix organization.
  • Be a high performer and able to fit the company “culture” by effectively multi-tasking and managing priorities; have a “sense of urgency” regarding issue resolution.
  • Understand the importance of relationships inside the company and with our suppliers and partners.
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or related field or equivalent experience; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 10+ years business experience, in direct and/or indirect procurement disciplines.
  • Strong commercial understanding and experience of driving and developing sourcing and supplier strategies, contractual components and negotiating large-scale $20M+ strategic agreements.
  • Excellent communicator that can interact with diverse groups across organizational levels and build strong relationships.
  • Familiarity with common process improvement methodologies and governance models, ability to facilitate change management.
  • Ability to implement new processes, influence and obtain support from a cross functional team.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and deadlines simultaneously in a fast-paced environment, and negotiate and collaborate effectively.
  • Strong written, presentation, and verbal communications skills that can applied across organizational levels.
  • Experience leading a team of procurement professionals with demonstrated strong employee satisfaction.
  • Minimal travel required.
