Summary:

Seagen is developing novel cancer therapeutics with the intention of significantly improving the quality and duration of patients’ lives. With an expanding depth and breadth of Technical Development (TD) activities we are seeking a Chief of Staff, reporting to the Senior Vice President of Technical Development, to support and manage activities and programs within this broad effort. This role will require strategic thinking around key operational issues, organizational processes and procedures, and communication, while enabling effective planning and execution. This position is both strategic and facilitative, requiring a willingness to play a very active, behind-the-scenes role, aiding the SVP of TD and his leadership team to further fulfill the departmental objectives. This role will ensure initiatives are prioritized appropriately and prepare leadership for upcoming decisions.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to the head of TD and is a member of the TD Leadership Team (TDLT), giving input on strategic imperatives, cross-functional projects, human capital, and organization budgets to ensure optimal operating environment.
  • Partner with TDLT to drive high organizational performance and operational efficiency. Develop key performance metrics for the department. Monitor and report to TDLT on a quarterly basis.
  • Oversee departmental budgeting and Latest Estimate (LE) process. Work with functional budget planners to synthesize needed information for Finance. Develop and implement efficient tools and work processes to streamline the budgeting and LE process. Manage Capex and Opex spend within budget. Provide report and analysis of spendings and resource allocations to TDLT periodically.
  • Manage TD leadership objectives, ensure adherence, and help drive organization towards completion. Coordinate and optimize critical activities, quarterly/annual planning processes, and business meetings in onsite and offsite settings.
  • Facilitate visioning and long-range planning of the department, including business and people strategy, technology focus, and laboratory expansion.
  • Orchestrate identification, prioritization, and advancement of TD initiatives; monitor progress and communicate updates to internal teams and external stakeholders. Serve as single point of contact for initiatives that impact TD.
  • Craft consistent and effective communication in alignment with organizational priorities for both internal and external consumption. Examples may include preparation of key presentations for internal and external speaking engagements.
  • Partner with TDLT to define strategy for industry outreach. Identify opportunity to influence health authorities and industry consortia on Seagen CMC strategies.
  • Partner with TOPS Chief of Staff peers to drive alignment of best practices among peer organizations.
  • Partner with HR to support extraordinary performance and departmental optimization by identifying opportunities for increasing employee engagement and satisfaction.
  • Continuously improve TD governance committees and decision-making processes. Be owner of consistent governance process across TD.
  • Ensure TD is living organizational vision and goals. Preserve and enhance TD culture. Develop and maintain a positive TD brand.
  • Trusted advisor to the SVP of TD

Qualifications:

  • Strong initiative with the ability to manage projects of varying complexity and timelines simultaneously
  • Effective leader with solid interpersonal skills including the ability to build trust, influence, and relationships across a large and diverse group
  • Handle confidential information with discretion
  • Adept communication skills including ability to summarize complex issues concisely and listen effectively to concerns and problems
  • High standards of excellence and exceptional attention to detail Self-starter who identifies and helps solve problems, and can deal with ambiguity
  • Familiarity and understanding of scientific principles that guide our business

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited institution and additional education (Masters, PhD, PharmD, MBA) in scientific field that is relevant to biotechnology, oncology and/or business administration
  • 8-10+ years relevant experience in biotechnology, drug development, program management or similar technical and/or managerial role

The hiring pay range for this position is $187,000 to $242,000 per year based on skills, education and experience relevant to the role. Other components of total compensation include a competitive equity grant at the time of hire (with additional annual grants, and grants upon promotion when applicable), and an annual bonus.
